The Miju Mishmi

The
Miju Mishmi and the Nishi have much in common, as do most of the tribes
in Arunachal Pradesh; as local tales go, these Mongoloid people migrated
into their present locations from some shared area in Tibet during only
the last three or four hundred years. The Mishmi occupy the eastern-most
valleys bordering Myanmar, far enough removed from their Nishi relatives
that, despite the shared ancestry, pronounced differences in custom and
culture have developed. The Mishmi live in longhouses, practice jhum agriculture,
and are believers of Donyi-Polo and Abo Tani, but in each example have
expressed it in their own distinct ways. Even the scenery here is different,
it’s mountains and rivers forming a marked contrast to those of
the west. For all their differences they nevertheless share the same fundamental
conditions, those of remoteness, obscurity and authenticity, making the
Mishmi another fantastic tribe to discover.
